While we were in Oahu, I turned to Chris and said, “I'm reminded of that song... 'they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.'' Funny enough, when I got home, I found out that the song, “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, was precisely written about this area! Talk about fitting lyrics. This is a view of the world-famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which Joni mentions as the “pink hotel” in the song. Unlike Joni, I will shamefully admit there's something I love about this tacky little 1927 palace. And you have to admit, unlike all the giant buildings around it, it's got personality.
