More of the sunset with a catamaran and both Lana'i and Kaho'olawe in the distance. Kaho'olawe is a very interesting island; from what I have read, it is one of the more arid islands in the chain, and was never a very hospitable environment to live or cultivate the lands.  During WWII, to make matters worse, the US Military took over the island and performed target practice on it.  This happened until George HW Bush halted all target practice on it in 1990.   There are still unexploded materials on the island, which I believe the military is locating and detonating to make the island somewhat habitable again.  In time, it will be returned to the Hawaiians fully.
