It will happen. The Anne-Marie I married will be resurrected 1 week from today at 5pm. At that time, she will walk out of her current employer's office a human being, no longer subject to 60+ hour work weeks, minimal recognition, and high levels of stress. It was a long time in the making, but the right opportunity finally arose.
A little over a week ago, while I was working in San Francisco, AM woke up and decided she had to do something to escape her current job. While this was nothing new, the fact that she did find a job posting that interested her was. The job description was a little vague, but it looked promising. So, after polishing up her resume a little, she sent it in. Later that day the company's HR person called to setup an interview for Thursday and answer any questions she had. AM found out the pay range she would be looking at, and how many hours would be expected. She also found out that she would be an hourly employee, so even if there was overtime
, she would actually be paid accordingly. Also, it was located 9 miles closer to home, and only 1 mile from my office.
On Thursday, AM went to the interview but seemed to think she came across as nervous and over-eger. She also found out that the job was a perfect fit for her (or vice-versa depending on your outlook), using almost all of her knowledge of the industry from her past 3 jobs. She was given a real job application to fill out, as well as a small essay to write on why she would be a good fit at the company. She filled out the application, completed the essay, and faxed them in Friday morning.
When we got home Friday evening, there was a message waiting for her on VM from the HR person. They asked that AM give them a call as soon as possible to discuss some things. In addition to leaving her work number, she also left her cell number and said that AM could call over the weekend if she had the opportunity. At this point AM asked Do you think I should call her cell phone,
to which I responded She left her cell phone number for a reason. They want to hire you.
Very soon after this AM called the HR person on her cell phone, and was given a job offer near the top end of the quoted salary range. Besides the salary she was looking for, she will get a lot more PTO (almost as much as I get), so she will actually be able to go on more vacations.
